The Bear Wallow Trail, nestled within the scenic Sierra National Forest, offers a captivating journey through both natural beauty and a rich tapestry of history. This path, once a vital route for the Yokut Native tribes of the San Joaquin Valley, served as a crucial corridor for hunting migrating Mule Deer that journeyed between the life-sustaining waters of the San Joaquin River and the powerful flow of the Kings River.
Embarking on an adventure along the Bear Wallow Trail unveils a vibrant landscape. During the spring and summer months, the trail comes alive with a dazzling display of wildflowers, where the striking purple hues of lupine and the cheerful golden brilliance of California poppies paint the meadows. These colorful displays dance amidst the swaying stalks of oat grass, creating a picturesque scene under the watchful canopy of majestic oak trees, which offer welcome shade along the route.
As you traverse the trail, prepare to be rewarded with breathtaking scenic overlooks. The Ridgecrest Heights provide sweeping panoramas, showcasing the tranquil expanse of Delilah Sequoia Highlands. Glimpses of the winding Kings River carve through the landscape below, leading the eye towards the impressive silhouette of Garnet Rock, a prominent landmark that punctuates the horizon.
Beyond its natural allure, the Bear Wallow Trail whispers tales of the past. The Yokut people, skilled hunters and deeply connected to this land, relied on this route for sustenance. Their presence echoes through the very soil beneath your feet, connecting modern-day hikers to centuries of indigenous life and tradition within the Sierra Nevada foothills.
The Sierra National Forest itself, established in 1893, adds another layer of historical significance to the experience. While specific documented history solely for the Bear Wallow Trail might be less readily available, its integration within this protected forest underscores its long-standing role in the regional landscape and its continued value for recreation and appreciation of the natural world.
Today, the Bear Wallow Trail offers a rewarding experience for hikers seeking natural beauty and a touch of history. Whether you are captivated by the vibrant flora, the stunning vistas, or the connection to the land's original inhabitants, a journey along the Bear Wallow Trail promises an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Sierra Nevada. The presence of the nearby Bear Wallow Camping Area further suggests the area's appeal for those wishing to immerse themselves in the tranquility and beauty of this special place.

There's something truly special about hiking above Lakeview and gazing out over Pine Flat Lake. On this particular trip, the experience was made even richer by the sight of wildflowers in full bloom – the classic California poppies and the lovely Lupine creating a stunning natural display. The gentle presence of grazing cattle in the Sierra National Forest added a touch of rustic charm. Finding a quiet spot, I prepared a Peak Refuel meal, a moment of simple satisfaction as I soaked in the beauty and tranquility of the surroundings.

Based on the provided news report, here are the detailed criminal activities of Shawn Sawa and Richard Best: Don and Sons Tim and Mark Guy Miramonte Sanitation Trash Company

The Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud:
 * The Core Scheme: From 2015 through 2017, Shawn Sawa and Richard Best orchestrated a scheme to steal canola, a commodity commonly used for livestock feed, from international food processors. The total value of the stolen canola amounted to $4.8 million.
 * Exploiting the Transloading Business: They utilized Richard Best's company, Richard Best Transfer Inc. (RBT), a train-to-truck transloading company, as the central mechanism for their theft. Transloading companies are responsible for transferring goods from one mode of transportation (like trains) to another (like trucks) for final delivery.
 * Sawa's Insider Role: Shawn Sawa held a key position as the manager of a victim food processor's branch office in Fresno. This role provided him with knowledge of the canola shipments and likely facilitated the initial diversion of the commodity to RBT. His "close relationship" with Best was crucial for the conspiracy.
 * Diverting the Canola: The victim food processors would send large quantities (hundreds of thousands of tons) of their canola to RBT, presumably for temporary storage and subsequent delivery to their customers. Instead of ensuring the canola reached its intended destination, Sawa and Best conspired to divert it for their own profit.
 * Selling the Stolen Goods: They established a channel to sell the stolen canola through an acquaintance in Texas. This individual had prior experience in the livestock-feed industry, making him a suitable intermediary to reach potential buyers like farms and dairies.
 * Financial Transactions and Concealment: The Texas acquaintance would sell the stolen canola and then distribute the proceeds according to Richard Best's instructions. This involved making wire transfers to various accounts, including:
   * Shawn Sawa's bank account. Notably, this account was opened in his spouse's name, indicating a deliberate attempt to conceal his involvement in the illegal activities and the source of the funds.
   * Richard Best Transfer Inc.'s (RBT) bank accounts.
   * Richard Best's personal bank accounts.
 * Creating False Records: To cover their tracks and prevent the victim food processors from discovering the missing canola, Sawa and Best caused RBT to issue fraudulent inventory reports. These reports were emailed to the food processors and falsely represented the amount of canola RBT had in stock. In reality, the inventory levels were significantly lower due to the ongoing theft.
 * Spending the Ill-Gotten Gains: The substantial profits generated from the sale of the stolen canola were used for a variety of personal and business expenses, including:
   * Luxury Purchases: They purchased luxury homes and multiple vehicles, indicating a lavish lifestyle funded by their criminal activity.
   * Recreational Activities: They took trips, suggesting they used the money for leisure and personal enjoyment.
   * Personal Services: They hired private karate teachers, highlighting the diverse ways they spent the stolen funds.
   * Business Operations: A portion of the proceeds was used to cover RBT's operating expenses, effectively using the stolen money to keep their fraudulent operation running.
Individual Roles:
 * Shawn Sawa: As the manager at the victim company, Sawa likely played a role in identifying opportunities to divert the canola and coordinating with Best. His close relationship with Best was fundamental to initiating and sustaining the scheme. He also actively participated in receiving the proceeds through a concealed bank account. His guilty plea to conspiracy to commit wire fraud acknowledges his agreement and participation in these criminal activities.
 * Richard Best: As the owner of RBT, Best provided the logistical infrastructure for the theft. His company was the recipient of the canola and the vehicle through which the fraudulent inventory reports were issued. He also directed the sale of the stolen goods and the distribution of the profits. While he has been charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud, these are still allegations at this stage.
In summary, their criminal activities involved a coordinated effort to exploit the transloading process, leveraging Sawa's insider knowledge and Best's business, to steal a valuable commodity, sell it for profit, and then actively conceal their actions through false documentation and the use of concealed financial accounts. The significant amount of money involved and the duration of the scheme highlight the scale and deliberate nature of their criminal enterprise.

Operating in the extreme conditions of Death Valley, the Harmony Borax Works was a crucial borax refinery in the late 1800s. Its legacy is inextricably linked to the "Twenty Mule Teams," who braved a 165-mile trek to deliver the refined mineral. The site now stands as a historical marker of the challenges and resilience of early desert industry.

A Journey Through Desert Extremes and Mining History:
You embarked on a classic California desert adventure, departing from Ridgecrest and immediately diving into the rugged terrain along Highway 178 towards Valley Wells. This initial leg likely showcased the gradual transition from the higher desert scrublands to the more arid expanses.
The shift onto Highway 190 marked your entry into the heart of Death Valley's domain. The landscape dramatically transformed, revealing the vast, sun-baked flats and the imposing mountain ranges that define this iconic national park. The drive along 190, a ribbon of asphalt cutting through the desolate beauty, would have offered breathtaking panoramas of salt flats, sand dunes, and the stark, colorful geology of the valley.
Continuing on Highway 127 towards Baker, you transitioned from the intense heat and geological drama of Death Valley to the more subtle, yet still harsh, beauty of the wider Mojave. Baker, a desert outpost, served as a gateway to the next leg of your journey.
The drive along Interstate 15 towards Barstow would have represented a return to a more populated, yet still desert-dominated, environment. Barstow, a major transportation hub, offered a contrast to the solitude of the previous sections.
Turning onto Highway 58 and then back onto Highway 395, you ventured into the historic mining towns of Red Mountain, Johannesburg, and Randsburg. These towns, remnants of the region's gold and silver rush, provided a glimpse into the area's rich and often turbulent past. The ghost town elements and preserved architecture likely offered a fascinating step back in time.
The final leg of your journey, back on Highway 178 along the Kern River and through Lake Isabella towards Bakersfield, brought a welcome change of scenery. The transition from the arid desert to the more verdant landscapes surrounding the Kern River and Lake Isabella offered a refreshing contrast. The winding road along the river, with its scenic views and cooler temperatures, provided a fitting conclusion to your desert adventure. Finally the drive into Bakersfield likely showed the transition from the mountains to the central valley.

My adventure took me along Highway 168 to the Tollhouse Overlook, offering a stunning view. From there, I noted the Mountain Rest Fire Station, approximately 11 miles to bretz Campground. I then turned onto Tollhouse Road, which led me to Peterson Road. Near Rush Creek, I encountered Cresman Road. The Twin Brooks private sawmill, also known as Peterson Mill, is situated in the Rush Creek area, marking the beginning of Big Creek Road. A few miles further down Big Creek Road, continuing on, I passed by the Granite Pool reached Soaproot Saddle Road where road splits. I continued on Big Creek Road and finally arrived at Bretz Mill Campground.
