Most devs’ passion projects either don’t have product-market fit, or they lack the execution ability and leverage to bring that vision to the level players expect. That’s why they flop.

That’s why I advocate a different path, especially for new devs:

Start by building what players want.
Learn the market. Build skill. Make money. Stack small, compounding wins.

Then, once you’ve got the experience and funding, build your dream game and actually have the power to pull it off.

Trying to lead with that on day one?
That’s exactly why most devs stay stuck.

This is why strategy is essential.
It’s not the enemy of passion.
It’s the vehicle that allows it to survive — and thrive.

Successful devs who relied on passion alone and made it? They’re outliers.
Most release their passion project first, it flops, and they quit.

The smarter path is thinking long-term and building a strategy.
That’s why making money early matters. It gives you options.
You can build smaller, market-aligned games or generate income through other channels, then use that leverage to form teams, pay collaborators, and take on more ambitious projects.

This is also what makes my content unique.
I’m the only one teaching Roblox development from a strategy-first perspective.
I saw the gap early — while front-page devs were either too deep in their own bubble or unable to explain how they actually succeeded.

So I built hundreds of videos breaking down what actually works.

I don’t claim to have all the answers. I’m not front page, aside from showing up in the "Featured" sort once or twice.
But what I do have on the SmartyRBX channel is a model that works better than anything else out there for developers trying to build a real career.

Some bigger devs on X thought I was talking down to them with my last post. I wasn’t.
I was speaking to the devs who look up to them and would’ve otherwise believed that passion alone was the formula.

They’re the ones who need to hear the truth:
You need to put strategy first.

I’m not arguing against passion.
I’m arguing for the preservation of it in a competitive space that eats most devs alive and leaves a few at the top shouting, “passion is everything.”

They were the lucky few.
Not the model.
And if you follow them blindly, you’re not chasing success. You’re chasing a lottery ticket. 

Making money is absolutely fundamental to game development, and if you do not have the goal to make money from your work, you are not a serious developer. 

Money is the fundamental driver for scaling, leverage, hiring dev teams, and amplifying your Roblox efforts to something beyond your initial, simple projects and commissions. 

People who prioritize passion above everything without ever considering strategy will always remain unrecognized hobbyists. 

They will never be seen as serious, recognized developers because they lack the will or intention to ever ascend beyond where they're at. 

Building with only passion and zero strategy is exactly why most devs stay broke.

Make your game with both passion and insight.

Because “just follow your heart” without understanding human behavior or game design?
That’s not noble. That’s naïve.
