Born on this day, Jan Campanus Vodňanský (1572–1622) was a prominent Czech humanist, poet, and composer of the late Renaissance period. Born in Vodňany, he became a notable figure in the intellectual and cultural life of the Bohemian Kingdom. Campanus was a professor and later rector at Charles University in Prague, where he advocated for the use of the Czech language in education and literature. He is remembered for his Latin poetry, his contributions to music, and his efforts to bridge the cultural divide during the turbulent period of the Counter-Reformation. Tragically, his life ended shortly after the Battle of White Mountain, a turning point that marked the suppression of Protestantism in Bohemia.

Born on this day, Conradin Kreutzer (1780–1849) was a German composer, conductor, and pianist, known for his contributions to opera, choral music, and Lieder. Born in Messkirch, Kreutzer studied law before turning to music as his vocation. He gained prominence as a composer in the early Romantic period, blending classical forms with emerging Romantic sensibilities. Among his notable works are the opera Das Nachtlager in Granada and his settings of texts for male choirs, which were especially popular in the 19th century. Kreutzer’s compositions often highlighted his skill in creating expressive melodies and his understanding of vocal and instrumental textures. Today, he is remembered for his contributions to choral repertoire and his influence on German musical life during his time.

Born on this day, Adolphe Adam (1803–1856) was a prolific French composer known for his contributions to the world of ballet and opera. Born on this day, Edwin Eugene Bagley (1857–1922) was an American composer and musician, best known for his marches, particularly the celebrated "National Emblem." Born in Craftsbury, Vermont, Bagley showed early musical talent, playing various brass instruments and performing with several bands. He spent much of his career as a cornetist and conductor, notably with the famous Gilmore and Sousa bands. "National Emblem," composed in 1902, stands out for its melodic incorporation of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and remains a staple in the repertoire of American military and concert bands. Bagley's contributions have solidified his reputation as a significant figure in the genre of American march music.
